Mill Road Fruit and Veg emerged the overwhelming winner for the ‘Derry Journal Business of the Year’ award.
Specialising in preparing quality fruit and veg for a wide range of customers, the popular Mill Road store, owned by the McAteer family continues to thrive.
The husband and wife partnership of Maurice and Christine McAteer were practically busy over the festive period, but having won the ‘Journal’ award they received a welcome confidence boost.
“First and foremost, I think it is very important that we acknowledge the work put in by our eight members of staff,” insisted Christine.
“And the fact so many of our customers actually took the time to vote for us in the competition gives us a great lift,” She added.
Always keen to source their produce locally, the McAteer business had stood the test of time and Maurice was quick to point out that they are planning for the future.
“We have now celebrated ten years in business which is absolutely brilliant as far as the family are concerned, but we must move with the times so we have recently invested in new equipment which has given an extra edge in getting our fresh products to market as quickly as possible.”
“Not surprisingly potatoes have played a vital role in our business as we also cater for roast potatoes and chips in addition to the more established spud,” quipped Maurice.
“We sliced, diced and prepared our fruit and veg for a wide range of customers such as schools, wholesalers and restaurants.”
“We also boost a busy passing trade at this time of the year and it’s very important to put in the hours as we believe we play a significant role in the annual Christmas dinner for quite a few families in our local community.”
Based at no. 33 Mill Road the McAteer family continue to thrive and as things will prove to be quite for the month of January, that time will be used not only to assess the past year but also plan for a busy 2016.
